I am very excited about television these days. Actually I’ve always been excited about television, even when I was a wee one out in the hinterlands with my Full House, my Step by Step and my Homicide: Life on the Street. But these days, I’m loving that television is all about quality and story. I love that true auteurs like Vince Gilligan, Lena Dunham and Jenji Kohan have taken it to new heights and I love that the introduction of the webisphere has taken the boundaries of that storying telling to infinity and beyond.
Amazon just released it’s new pilot season last week and I’m sold. So far faves include the comedies Really and Red Oaks (it just gets the 80s right). But the one I’m really excited about is The Cosmopolitans, starring Adam Brody and Chloe Sevigny and created by Whit Stillman (another visionary). It had already generated some early buzz, but the moment I heard “expats in Paris,” I was sold. There’s just something about the shared experience of the life abroad and seeing it come to life in Hemingway’s books, or on the big or little screen. So here’s a little trailer of what Amazon’s got simmering away. You can catch all of Amazon’s five new pilots here, and definitely remember to vote for them! (and join Prime!)
Oh and since you probably missed out on the last wave of pilot season, the groundbreaking Transparent is about to premiere (Sept 26, Amazon exclusive). I just can’t wait. Here’s their Season One trailer and check out their pilot here if you haven’t had the chance yet.
Sincerely, your television junkie.
