There are weeks that drone. And there are weeks that explode. I’m convinced they’re all guided by the moon and I’ve got some lupine blood in me. If the bottom of my espresso is correct, this means that I’m in a creatively restless rut. I’m in front of the computer processing photos and dreaming of shoots and feeling a little too stationary. So in the middle of colour corrections, I’m looking for inspiration and new ways of expression. And among all of the Instagram aspirations, tumblr loves and blog scrolling, there is Jamie Beck. With her creative partner slash husband Kevin Burg at their Ann Street Studio, Jamie has pioneered the cinemagraph. It’s not just a GIF. Think refined magical moment. Not just a shimmying Shaq, but a tiny dream piece of time that’s been frozen. Each moment takes about 3-4 hours (for the simple ones) and even a whole day to create by seamlessly stringing together a short selection of frames (which is actually a lot of frames). And the payoff is big.
Jamie and Kevin are taking fashion photography to a whole new level with the cinemagraph and are peaking my curiosity about what I can be doing with this medium. I’ve got Cait’s lookook and the Crossfit Open Games coming up soon in my shoot schedule, so I’m really looking forward to getting some pictures moving. Just a little bit.
