C / Fisher Found

When Tiff was in town (sighs, wipes away single tear), we went to the Rose Bowl Flea. It’s a wonderland, full of antiques, rough-looking sunburns, teenage girls screaming at their mothers, and air plant vendors. What I didn’t expect, was to find Eileen Fisher there. Not actually Eileen, like the person, but to my absolute delight, Fisher Found had a booth at the market.

So, I didn’t know about Fisher Found, maybe because they used to go by Green Eileen, but probably because I don’t know about cool stuff like I used to. Anyway, Fisher Found is amazing, and it’s the place to find used Eileen Fisher stuff for way less than ticket price.

I want to also take a second to say yeah, I love Eileen Fisher. The company has set the standard for what it means to be a sustainable, ethical brand, and was doing it before it was cool, and before anyone asked it of them. They just see it as the right way to do business, and I think that’s awesome. Also, I used to think of Eileen Fisher as a brand that my mom would wear, and that I would not. Turns out, my mom has pretty good taste, and just how I have grown into stealing her music, her old purses, and her recipes, I am jumping on this train too. Fisher makes the best, softest basics, and the few pieces that I have, I wear to death.

The site is searchable by type of clothing, and because it’s all pre-worn, renewed, and remade, there is just one piece of each. It’s a lot like digging through piles at the flea market, but it doesn’t smell like dust and fish, and you won’t have to fight off strangers for your favorite piece. Unless that stranger is me.

Pieces that are up right now:

Hope you like it as much as I do! My birthday is in two days.

C / Hey NAU..hey NAU

hey-nau

Hi guys. Tiff and I will be doing gift guides again this year (starting tomorrow, yay!) but I have found so many great companies while looking for the lists, I feel like I have to share a few more. If there is something that you want to buy, but you don’t know how to get the sustainable version of it yet, email me, and I will find it for you and put it on the internet.

The first company that I am looking at is NAU, out of Portland, Oregon. “Of course it’s from Portland” you say, “does it come with irony and a bird on it?” Good one, you. This awesome company came together a few years ago and they are making high quality technical gear out of sustainable and renewable materials. The clothing sells for about the same amount as their buddies’ stuff at North Face, but they do business in a very different way. NAU uses fabrics like alpaca wool, organic cotton, recycled polyester, and my personal textile crush, Tencel. They also work alongside international human rights monitoring groups to ensure their international production facilities meet high standards.

These are some of my favorite pieces from their current collection, and if you want to buy them for me, that is totally fine and in no way inappropriate.

C / California Cozy

It has been a long, long time since I have felt chilly. Not air-conditioning on the couch chilly, but brisk-outside, wearing flannel and drinking tea chilly. Today, in sunny LA, it is overcast, 68F (20C, for Tiff) and this coffee shop is playing throwback Joni Mitchell.  I get that 68F isn’t exactly the end of days, but for someone who has been pining for sweater weather for the last five years, I am enjoying the hell out of it.

Naturally, this moment of coziness has led me to internet dive into sweaters, scarves, and jackets that I will live in for the next few months, even when it’s inappropriate. The thing is, I don’t exactly have a “closet” to put sweaters in, or an “apartment” to live in, so until I have a permanent place to put myself, these are all dream cozy pieces.

Because I care about not destroying the world with my choices (#VOTE), I am looking at eco-friendly, sustainably-made options.

C / Emma and Zady

I love a good collaboration. I love it even more when it involves one of my favorite public figures and one of my favorite companies. Emma Watson and Zady have come together to promote ethical and sustainable fashion and are currently launching their collaborative collection. So far, there are only three pieces available to pre-order, but they are solid. The shiny-objects side of my brain was hoping for more items, but they are staying true to the less-is more principle, and focusing on three timeless pieces you can wear forever.

Hermoine Granger  Emma Watson has been a badass since she was like 6, and I have a ton of respect for her for using her fame-powers for good, and generally choosing to be an awesome person in an industry that does not require that of her. This collection is anther example of her pushing forward businesses that are doing things the right way, and proving what a Gryffindor she is.

C / Part of Your World / Della

damn-della.jpgWelcome to the first installment of my new series, Part of Your World.

This idea actually came from Tiff, after spending the past few years sending emails back and forth with the subject line “YOU SHOULD WORK HERE.” There are so many cool companies up and running right now, making beautiful things in a smart and kind way. This is fantastic news for me, because I’m looking to be a part of something great.

The first company on the horizon is Della. The LA-based company was started in 2009 and all clothing and accessories are made in Ghana. Della sources locally in Ghana and provides fair wages, literacy, child care, and economic empowerment programs for their employees. The company uses a sustainable business model, and isn’t set up as a charity, which I really like. They are providing solid and dependable employment for skilled labor in a place that needs it. They also happen to make beautiful clothes.

Della has managed to put together collections that are breezy, effortless and elegant, all the same time. The patterns and textures are interesting and very cool-girl, while remaining accessible and not falling victim to passing trends and barely-wearable pieces. The clothes are made to fit a range of body types, and it looks as though it’s possible to eat actual food while wearing these pieces.

I love this company, and would love to be a part of something great like this. Can’t wait to see what they do next!

All photos via Della, and I highly recommend visiting their gorgeous site.
